"Left" and "Right" are used in the U.S. to describe political beliefs. The usage began in France, where the "left" was the "Party of Movement" and the "right" was the "Party of Order." In the U.S., democrats are considered "left-wing" (or "leftists") and "liberal" and republicans are considered "right-wing" and "conservative."
